Dror Benshetrit, principal designer and founder of Dror, is a rising talent who has come into his own in the past five years. The Tel Aviv native and graduate of the renowned Design Academy in Eindhoven, Holland, has made a mark in the design world, consistently producing objects that create conceptual poetry through narrative transformations. Dror's design process has now been applied to a multitude of disciplines and continues to be challenged by a slate of diversifying projects. Dror’s Vase of Phases, a shattered porcelain vase designed by revered tabletop company Rosenthal, has won several design awards and was acquired for the permanent collections of many museums. Dror is currently represented by Michele Caniato of elite New York design agency Culture and Commerce, Inc., which also represents designers Philippe Stark and Marcel Wander.

One Good Chair Design Competition

Lance Hosey, Director of William McDonough + Partners, Announces One Good Chair Design Competition

Through the Sustainable Furniture Council, Mr. Hosey has organized a design competition for an "eco-chair," with a focus on how form and image can enhance conservation and comfort. The site just went "live," and entries are due in June.

Submission requirements are easy, the entry fee is cheap, there's a cash prize of $4,500, lots of press coverage, and a great jury, including Susan Szenasy, Eric Pfeiffer, Jill Fehrenbacher, Galen Cranz, Bill Dowell, Michael Wollaeger, and myself.

Green Week Keynote Address: Dr. Paul Polak

This year's keynote address will be given by Dr. Paul Polak, author of the acclaimed book Out of Poverty, and founder of the social design network D-Rev: Design for the other 90%. His show, Design for the other 90% was last summer's exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt National Museum of Design. In his keynote address, Dr. Polak will discuss the over 800 million people in the world living on less than a dollar a day, and how to design products which enable them to elevate their economic status. Green Light at Eyebeam

This year, Eyebeam's Sustainability Research Group has been at work on an initiative called Beyond Light Bulbs, designed to inform individuals about contemporary "sustainable and green concepts" for helping the environment. Among the group's programs has been a series of exhibitions and the newest one, "Feedback", opened last week to an enormous crowd.

What does it mean to think “green”?

Open through April 19, the show features 19 projects varying from public art projects and industrial design to DIY energy solutions and software tools—to inspire discussion and action on this pervasive (and increasingly commodified) subject.

Among the projects included are winners of Eyebeam's EcoVis Challenge in which participants responded to a call for new ways to brand and visualize environmental issues.

Also included are Rebecca Bray and Britta Riley's DrinkPeeDrinkDrinkPee (2008) project, which gives viewers tools for thinking of their body as an ecosystem.

Andrea Polli's Queensbridge Wind Power Project (2004), which explores "how clean, renewable wind power might be integrated into the landmark architecture of the Queensboro Bridge."

Eve Mosher's HighWaterLine (2007-Ongoing), in which she drew a blue chalk line at 10 feet above sea level around areas of the city, in order to indicate the heights to which flood waters are expected to rise as a result of global warming.

Many of the nineteen projects in "Feedback" use humor and irony to provide a point of entry into a subject about which viewers are often apathetic or misinformed. All cleverness aside, the show is meant to provoke action.

AFHny's current projects include: studies for a boat house for an ecologically focused canoe group on the Gowanus Canal; design for community center, homeless shelter, and medical clinic in a church basement in Morningside Heights; aiding victims of Hurricane Katrina through work in Biloxi, Mississippi; catalyst projects for High Bridge Park in the Bronx in collaboration with the Parks Department; and re-envisioning the physical structure of a community arts organization in the South Bronx from interior storage solutions to green roof interventions.

Architecture for Humanity New York has been collaborating with a community arts organization, The Point, CDC, to re-envision the use of their facility.

The Point is a Community Development Corporation dedicated to encouraging the arts, local enterprise, responsible ecology, and self-investment in the Hunts Point Community in the South Bronx through an after-school program serving neighborhood children with homework help, visual arts, literacy, circus arts, photography, music, and drama.
